Dry panning is not allowed; Dry panning occurs when a contestant preceving where the contest gold has been hidden, places their hand directly over the gold trapping it. Then when the call to start is given they flip the pan upside down, dumping most of the gravel. they then pan out a hand full of gravel. Dry panning in any event will result in disqualification.
Ten Flake Event
A sufficient number of pans will be placed on the ground about ten feet from the river. They will be filled with carefully selected bar run clayey gravel into which the chief judge will place ten 16 mesh flakes of medium Gold. Contestants will be called to stand by their pans. There will be two alternate timers. When the chief timer calls "Panniers pick up your pans" you will proceed with your pan to the river being careful not to jostle other panners and being careful not to step into deep water while making sure your pan does not touch the water. This contest has a time limit of 5 minutes and you will be awarded 1 point for every 16 mesh piece that you show to the judges Be aware that there is lots of flood gold in this gravel for which you will receive a WOW but no points. The time keeper will say "Panners stand ready" "Countdown 3, 2, 1, Go" The timekeeper will call half time,1 Minute, 30 Seconds, 15, 10, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Stop panning". You must have your pan out of the water. You must not tip it over letting water out, vibrate it or jostle it in any way and must place it on the judges table and then you will stand back. You will be asked how many pieces you see. The judges will tell you how many they see and their decision is final. Judges may move a piece of gold if they believe that it is obscuring another piece. Contestants will move in such a way that they do not crowd or jostle others in the line.
